nature in miniature

As a person of European background born on Australian soil, the question of identity is vexed. David Gulpilil the indigenous actor in the Nicholas Roeg movie Walkabout made the comment that anyone whose mother’s umbilical cord was cut over this country, whose blood and natal fluids flowed onto this soil has a link to this place. My work is a struggle to clarify that link, to celebrate it when creativity and inspiration allow. In the movie Walkabout, DG’s walk on line in the Simpson Desert with its blood-red-soil was a joyous shout: ‘gappi’, water.
