I woke up this morning to the news that the Dalai Lama had landed at Sydney airport at 4 am on his way to a retreat in the Blue Mtns. What better approximation of Daramsala that Katoomba and the the Three Sisters, cliffs of sheer beauty, wreathed in bracing winter air.
The USA has been embroiled in a controversy of an Olympic athlete becoming transgender, just as lately we in Australia have, with an Army officer going from butch uniform to femme with lippe. It strikes at the core of the machismo in our society; we raise our young men to believe that they have to be brutal to succeed; only the feeble are allowed to doubt their surface gender characteristics. When the heroes of our macho society crumble and redefine themselves, we are left without a model to look up to.
By contrast, the Dalai Lama teaches that reality is within, is invisible, is self determined.
